Help !!!-Painting Reflections

>> Friday, March 28, 2008

I love watercolor paitings where reflections have been depicted. But when I try my hand at it, I only see muddy gooey attempts. If anyone has suggestions that worked for them please help/advise me. I know I have to atelast post some digital prints of my paitings and am lagging behind in that but will get to it mostly by the next weekend.

I can say all watercolors look fabulous from a particular distance. The nearer they are to the eye,the more critical we can become. So for a painting to look beautiful at a short distance is what I am aiming at as an amateur in this technique.
I mean all my paintings also look great when they are at a distance. The moment I start to reduce that distance, the more mistakes I seem to pick out.

Does anyone else also face this issue...

Trials with watercolors

Watercolors:

I like transparent elusive quality that the technique lends to the subject esp the greens (when we actually succeed in capturing and rendering the right tree/grass/ foliage colors).

I always try to imitate a lot of paintings and techniques and am still in the phase of figuring out the right mix which works for me. It seems simple at times and proves much more than I could handle and vice versa. I still have to learn to render my own observations in a palette that complements it so that is why I am learning to paint via the most commonly known way-- try to paint and catch your mistakes.

I have learnt that when I imitate any painting, it is only half as good as the original(owing to my present talent pool in this particular technique). I think that is the reason why I try to find extremely good pictures to copy from so that I am atleast near to something that I would eventually like to see. Just like the quote" aim at the stars .. even if you fall you will be a lot higher from where you began.."

But all in all, I can see a visible improvement from when I actually began this journey of exploring watercolors.

Concept of blogging

I actually stumbled upon this whole blogging exercise/network while I was looking for practical advice for my new interest/hobby--watercolors!!!
I will be posting my trials with watercolors soon (as soon as I can manage to scan them).

I think it is a neat idea to be able to have a space like this which allows you to share and engage in discussions with basically anyone who is interested and is lucky enough to find you online or probably even knows you. At times this factor of not knwoing whom you might interact, is the charm of this whole exercise too( that is what i feel I may be naive..).
